How Lexus has responded
- Q: What will Lexus do?
-
Any vehicle involved in the recall will need to have the necessary repairs and/or modifications made. The repairs and modifications that will be needed are to the floor mat, driver side foot well surface, as well as the accelerator pedal. If you are aware that your vehicle is on the recall list, all effected areas will need to be inspected and replaced if needed. As an additional precaution, Lexus will also be installing a newly designed override system that will insure extra confidence while driving. This system will cut the engine power in the case of simultaneous brake and acceleration at certain speeds and driving conditions.
- Q: What will Lexus of Northborough do?
-
For your convienece, if your vehicle is under the recall, Lexus of Northborough will provide services that will make the recall service an easy experience. When you book your service, you will receive a complimentary tank of gas and car wash as well as complimentary pick-up and drop-off. Our goal is to make this experience go as smoothly and efficiently as possible for you.
- Q: Is there a warning that this condition could exist in my vehicle?
-
The pedal entrapment can only occur on vehicles where the driver’s side floor mats are not compatible with the vehicle. If they are not properly secured, an unwanted acceleration can take place. It has been suggested by Lexus that drivers remove their floor mats (DO NOT REPLACE WITH ANOTHER FLOOR MAT) until your vehicle is able to have the proper service required. Floor mats installed and designed by Lexus for your vehicle should be the only ones used after the service is complete.
- Q: What should drivers do if there is an accelerator pedal interference?
-
If your vehicle continues to accelerate after the release of the pedal please take the following actions:
-
Try not to panic. If possible and if you feel safe in doing so, try and pull the floor mat from being stuck underneath the pedal towards the seat. Pull over and turn off the engine.
-
If you can not pull the floor mat from under the pedal, firmly push the brake pedal with both feet. Do not pump your brakes, as this will decrease the effort to stop the vehicle.
-
If possible, shift the transmission into Neutral (N) and pull onto the side of the road safely to stop. Turn off your engine when you are safely stopped on the side of the road.
-
If you can not put the vehicle into Neutral, turn of your engine by holding the button for at least 3 seconds. Do not tap the start/stop button as this may cause loss of control or steering of the vehicle.
